Book Review… The first thing I noticed about Just Listen was how Sarah Dessen was able to get into the mind of a teenage girl so well. Annabel seemed to come to life for me as I was reading; I felt like I was there with her, sharing her experiences. The way she speaks, feels and acts is so true to life. Everything she does is something I can visualize one of my friends doing. I think that’s one of the main reasons this book is so popular. Sarah Dessen also uses phenomenal language. She uses metaphors, symbolism, and realistic dialogue throughout the book. She has a very different style of writing that grabbed my attention from the first page of the book and kept me reading. Another great thing about Just Listen is how Sarah Dessen adds multiple side stories along with the main conflict. Instead of focusing the entire story on Annabel’s secret, she includes other conflicts like Whitney’s eating disorder, Annabel’s forced modeling and a relationship with Owen. This makes the story more enjoyable and real because all of these are things that a real girl could have to deal with. This book is very believable because of the conflicts and characters. Annabel’s life is far from perfect, which makes her character much more believable. Also, the conflict with her secret is something that could easily happen to a high school girl. This helped to grab my attention, too, because what happened to Annabel is a big issue in the world right now. While it’s scary, this story is inspiring because it shows that speaking out is important.
